Wise WordsRecently I was visiting with a new friend and we were talking about issues in life and how we can help others deal with those problems. He reminded me that the first key is VISIBILITY, which leads to CREDIBILITY, which leads to IMPACT. Those three principles can be used in a variety of situations, but I think no greater place than at home. For those who are parents, working with our children can be a struggle. What can we do?First of all, we can be VISIBLE. Our children need to see us at home. Work can take much out of us and there are many things, perhaps even good things, that want to take our time.  Our time with our children is important. How often do we hear of a friend’s thanking someone “just for being there”. Perhaps helping with homework, perhaps working on certain projects, perhaps throwing a ball or swinging a club, but actual presence and interaction. I know of one who set aside weekend time to be alone with each child doing what he/she wanted to do. It works.Being visible makes us CREDIBLE. By “being there” gives us believability. I doubt there is a parent who never heard these words from a teenager “You just do not understand”. Welcome to the club. We earn trust by presence and understanding (perhaps even asking them to help me understand). It is a process that comes over time, but there is no better time than now. We earn trust by being consistent and unified in purpose. They will listen better when they believe you are credible.

Being credible allows us to make an IMPACT. We can have influence on the values and actions of our children. It is not easy, but it is rewarding. And we have help from our Heavenly Father who is eager to be involved in our lives and in the lives of our children as well. We can look to Him, we can go to Him. As parents, we are given the responsibility to raise our children to be successful adults who can function in our world. If we are visible and gain credibility, we can have impact.
